I'm sure you've heard the buzz everywhere. Corporate branding, brand identity, marketing and along with all of that comes the face of the brand.
We have all read about brand identity. And it's really fun to go on Pinterest and look at all the cool colors, fonts, logo ideas and stock photos that would look amazing on our websites. What you may not know, is that one of the most important things that you can do for your brand identity is have a professional head-shot that matches your brand.
I'm not here to shame all the people that are still using their 1980s Glamour shot. You know who you are. I'm not here to make you feel bad about using your phone to take a selfie. What I do want to tell you is that even though you may have a beautiful professional portrait taken by a professional photographer it may not match your brand. Your photograph imbues what your company stands for.
For instance if you are a kids birthday party event planner. It wouldn't make sense to have a somber black and white serious image of yourself on your website. Nor would it make sense for a lawyer to have a headshot holding a bunch of colorful balloons.
Your business portrait should innately say something about your business. It should be warm and inviting. If possible you should be wearing something that has your business colors. People should know what you do for a living just by looking at this photograph or at least it should say something about your personality and how your personality helps with your type of business.
Some people don't like to smile and their photographs, I get it maybe you don't feel comfortable or maybe you want to look kinda sexy or badass. Unless you sell motorcycle parts you probably shouldn't look like a badass. If you're selling homes, you should look warm, inviting and honest. If you're an event planner you should look fun and happy. Unless you plan events that are sad and mournful.
Here is an example a before and after. This is my fiancé so I can shame him publicly. Josh thought that it was perfectly acceptable to have this horrible yellow photograph as his business portrait. I'm sure it was shot on somebody's phone. He probably didn't think much of it and just put it on his LinkedIn.
He sells technology to major motion picture studios. He deals with mostly techies and artists. His professional photograph needed to look warm and inviting but not silly. In his industry you don't wear a suit and tie. It's California casual. He had been able to get by with that awful photograph because he has a stunning resume but once we changed the photograph he landed an amazing job at one of the coolest and sexiest companies in LA.
Here are some of the business head shots that I have done over the last 5 years. These are my favorite business professional portraits.
I shoot natural light business portraits, in studio corporate portraits along with environmental on location portraits. I offer discounts for any business with 5 or more employees taking their head shots.
